Sports Sunglasses

Sunglasses for sports tend to have a UV protection of 99% - 100% absorption.

  • Skiing & Snow Boarding - UV protection of 99% - 100% absorption.  Polycarbonate lenses are best because they do not shatter and do not become foggy.  Ideally frames should be made of plastic, which is sturdy and flexible in case the glasses fall, or are exposed to rough conditions.  Frames that wrap around will offer the most protection from UV rays and protection from wind and snow.  Further, the sunglasses should have polarised lenses, which absorb glare from snow.  The colour of lenses is usually amber or an orangey red.
  • Cycling - Wraparound frames are ideal as they reduce the amount of wind and dust that can get into the eye.  The ideal colour for lenses is brown and photochromic lenses are particularly good as they can change colour according to light.
  • Tennis - Polycarbonate lenses should be worn because they wont shatter in case a ball hits them.  The frame material should be made of plastic such as polycarbonate, which won’t snap very easily.  It may be a good idea to secure sunglasses with a strap in case they get knocked off.
  • Golf - Brown and rose coloured lenses are good as they contrast well with the green of the grass.  Specifically designed frames can be bought which have a minimised bridge and an extended bottom flap.  This will reduce visual distraction of the frames whilst swinging to hit the golf ball.
