Protection Against Snow Blindness

Snow blindness can be prevented by wearing the right type of eyewear.  Sunglasses should transmit 5-10% of visible light and absorb almost all ultraviolet rays.  It is important that eyes are covered from the sides as well as the front since light can come in through the sides of glasses.  Look out for sunglasses with side eye-shields.  Mountaineers are particularly vulnerable because on higher grounds there is less atmospheric filtering of UV rays.  Also, reflection from snow and ice can make eyes particularly exposed to UVB light and cause snow blindness.  It is important to wear sunglasses even when the sky is overcast to protect your eyes.  This is because UV rays may still pass through clouds.
