New Diabetic Retinopathy Research Announced
University College London has announced that it is to partner with AstraZeneca in order to develop regenerative treatments for the progressive eye disease diabetic retinopathy, which affects people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and is thought to be the most common cause of vision loss in people of working age.
Researchers at the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London will collaborate with colleagues at AstraZeneca for three years in order to identify new cellular therapies that will utilise the regenerative possibilities of stem cells in a bid to improve vision in patients slowly losing their vision.
Researcher s hope to be able to develop transplantable material derived from stem cells or to stimulate new cell growth directly in patient's eyes.
