Drug Delivery for Diabetic Retinopathy at Diabetes conference in London

Today sees the annual Diabetes Conference in London where Dr. Paul Ashton, the chief executive officer is to provide a speech on the improvement of administering drugs to patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy. He is also to discuss the recent development of the drug Iluvien® to help with the treatment of patients suffering from diabetic macular edema.

Currently, the company of which Dr. Ashton belongs, PSivida corp, are leaders in the development of a type of technology that delivers drugs that offer sustained release to places such as the eye. With there being only three of these types of products worldwide that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used in ophthalmic surgeries the company boast the ownership of two of these. Therefore, it is clear that this company are amongst the best when it comes to developing treatments which will help patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy. His speech is to include information on the difficulties of administering drugs to the very back of the eye (where diabetic retinopathy predominantly occurs) and he will describe the barriers that need overcoming to provide a clinically effective therapy for the disease. He is to discuss how PSivida and other companies have developed technologies helping to overcome such barriers. With regards to Iluvien®, Dr. Ashton will inform the conference of the investigation stages of the drug used to treat DME. The drug works by being inserted by a needle right to the back of the patient’s eye where the drug works for up to 3 years.

With many other drug companies also expected to speak at this 6th annual conference, it is hoped that the day will be a positive step in the vast and varied treatments for many different areas of diabetes.
