Suitability for Radial Keratotomy (RK)
Like most types of eye surgery, certain eye conditions and medical conditions will prohibit the use of RK. You are suitable for RK if you have normal, healthy eyes and your prescription is stable. Mild to moderate nearsightedness that is not getting worse with time is the ideal condition. Unsuitable factors include:
- If nearsightedness has not stabilised and is still getting worse. For this reason the surgery is not recommended for teenagers.
- If you suffer from pathological myopia. This problem starts at a young age when the eyeball fails to stop growing longer.
- If you have degenerative changes caused by severe nearsightedness (high myopia), for example retinal tears.
- If you have an abnormal or diseased cornea.
- If you have any medical conditions, which may affect wound healing
