Side Effects of Radial Keratotomy

  • Driving - You must be driven home after the surgery.
  • Eye Drops - You may be given eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation
  • Eye Contact - After the procedure, a patch is placed on the eye to protect it.  You are free to go home after the surgery but care must be taken not to touch or disturb the eye.
  • Eye Care - It is recommended that you avoid vigorous sports, eye makeup, and activities that may get water in the eye such as swimming.  You may be advised not to shower for up to two days following surgery.
  • Discomfort - The operation is generally painless but painkillers can be taken.  There maybe some mild scratchiness or redness in the eye.  Some people experience aching or throbbing, or a feeling that there is something in the eye for up to two days following surgery.
  • Light Sensitivity - For the first 24 hours after the surgery, there may be some sensitivity to light.
  • Recovery - You may return to your normal activities within a few days.  Vision is usually good within the first week, but fluctuation of visual acuity from morning to night can be expected for up to six months following surgery.  Unstable vision is common in the first 3 months but may last for up to 1 year.  A second operation may be required to reduce any residual myopia.
  • Glare - At night you may experience glare for the first six months.  For others this may last for up to three years.
