Causes of Pterygium

Pterygia are more commonly reported by people living in sunny and windy climates.  There is also an increased incidence with people who are particularly highly exposed to ultraviolet light.  Although the cause is not certain, it has been advocated to UV rays, or infrared light and eye irritation.  Therefore, to reduce the risk of pterygium, UV exposure should be reduced by wearing sunglasses, which block up to 100% of harmful UV rays.  Sunglasses can also protect eyes from wind and dust, which can irritate eyes.  Sunglasses, which wrap around the head and sit snugly on the face, are ideal for blocking UV rays at all angles.
