Eye Test Results

After the eye test the optometrist will explain the results.  This is your chance to ask any questions about any concerns you have and what the results show.  If you require glasses/lenses or if you are interested in laser eye surgery, your options can be discussed.

The optometrist will inform you when you should have your eyes examined again and you will be given a prescription for glasses or contact lenses, or a statement, which confirms that your eyes don't need correction.  Most physicians will remind you when your next eye test should be, by writing to you nearer the time.  If you have any eye diseases on conditions you may be referred to a doctor/specialist/ophthalmologist or to hospital.

Choosing a Frame

If glasses have been prescribed, you may wish to buy them from the opticians, who will help you choose the best ones and will make any necessary adjustments to the frame and lens.  It is important to bear-in-mind that it may be more difficult to resolve problems with glasses that have not been dispensed by your optician.  This is confirmed by the OCCS annual report 2003: “The prescribing and dispensing of spectacles are very closely linked and it would be in your best interests to have your spectacles dispensed where you have your eyes examined.  It is often more difficult to resolve any problems you may have with your spectacles when prescribing and supply are separated.”

Choosing Contact Lenses

You may wish to wear contact lenses instead of glasses or use both but at different times.  There are a variety of contact lenses available.  The optician will help you choose contact lenses and give you advice on the various types of lenses available, the procedures for fitting them and how to care and clean your lenses.
