The Snellen Chart at an Eye Test

Vision is usually measured using a Snellen Chart.  This is composed of a series of black letters in rows, on a white board, and is typically used by optometrists.  The chart is viewed at 6 metres.  A visual acuity of 6/9 indicates that the chart was viewed at 6 metres and that the lowest line that could be read was labelled 9.  Someone with normal vision would be able to read these letters at 9 metres.  6/60 vision indicates that someone could only see the top letter on the chart at 6 metres and that someone with normal vision would be able to read this letter at 60 metres.  On most charts, the second from bottom line is 6/6.  This is a normal good level of vision and what majority of people can expect to achieve.  In the UK, driving standard falls between the 5th line (6/12) and the 6th line (6/9).
