A Career In Ophthalmology, Is It For You?

Have you often wondered what a career in ophthalmology or eye care would be like? If so, please read on.

Over 93% of the public consider sight as their most valuable sense and fear loosing it the most. As an optometrist, it would be your job to prevent this from happening. You can expect job diversity, satisfaction and good career progression.

Optometry is a rapidly evolving profession where individuals are expected to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to care for patients and their eyesight. It encompasses many different specialities, from ophthalmology through to laser eye surgery.

Becoming an ophthalmologist requires a number of years of study at medical school, depending upon the country you live in (It is currently 5 years in the UK). After being awarded a degree in the subject and registration with the GMC (General Medical Council), a placement period usually in a hospital is necessary. After this period, you can opt to train to become an ophthalmologist, where after a number of training years and examination by a royal college, you can then specialise in a branch of ophthalmology such as laser eye surgery.

Currently in the UK there are three colleges that award post-graduate degrees in ophthalmology, these are The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, The Royal College Of Glasgow and The Royal College Of Edinburgh. The college you attend for examination will determine the degree you get, e.g. In England, The Royal College Of Ophthalmologists awards MRCOphth and FRCOphth (the first to become a member, the second a fellow). It is also important to note that to become an ophthalmologist, you must also hold a MRCS (Member of The Royal College Of Surgeons) qualification. As with all medical professionals, education and examination are ongoing. This is key to maintaining adequate standards of care for patients.

If you are interested in a career in ophthalmology, you can contact your local careers centre or try going online to the British Medical Association (BMA) Website.
