Specsavers Lifesaving Eye Exam
A teenager who worked at her local optician has every reason to be glad she went to work for Specsavers after colleagues spotted a dangerous swelling in her left eye. 19 year old Kirsty Willis from Staines had been feeling nauseous and dizzy, when she suddenly began to lose her vision prompting her colleagues to carry out a routine eye exam that has undoubtedly saved the teenager's life.

Teen Eye Tests Could Miss Eye Problems
Teen eye exams could fail to detect vision problems including farsightedness and curving of the cornea, or astigmatisim, researchers claim. A new report published in the journal, Archives of Ophthalmology, shows that using a visual acuity exam to screen for vision problems could result in thousands of children and teens not being referred for vision correcting treatments.

Poor eyesight could cause learning difficulties, researchers claim. Scientists at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology believe that malfunctioning retinal cells could cause problems with motor skills, handwriting, counting and more.

Eye Test Diagnoses Multiple Sclerosis
A simple eye exam could be used to detect multiple sclerosis in its early stages, researchers claim. A research paper, published in the journal Annals of Neurology, explains that specialist medical imaging technology can be used to measure thinning of the retina in people with multiple sclerosis. Researchers believe that screening for retinal thinning could enable doctors to diagnose the disabling neurological condition before other symptoms begin to manifest.

Eye Test for Mad Cow Disease
Researchers could begin to use eye tests to screen cattle for mad cow disease. Research published in the journal Analytic Chemistry shows that the eye chemically changes when the disease manifests – meaning a routine eye inspection could detect the condition and stop infected meat from contaminating individuals.

Eye Exam Could Detect Dementia
New research shows that a simple eye exam could diagnose Alzheimer's - years before symptoms manifest. Researchers at Boston University's Alzheimer's Disease Centre explain that a protein that causes memory loss in the brain also accumulates in the eyes and can be detected by an eye exam.

Putting off a routine visit to the opticians may now be a little harder, after it has emerged that a simple eye exam saved a woman from a potentially life threatening condition. Lisa Walmsley, from Southport, was directed to accident and emergency after her optician spotted a massive aneurysm on her brain that had been affecting her vision.
