Lens Implants Could Replace Laser Surgery

Eye experts at The Moorfields Eye Hospital in London predict that lens implants could replace laser surgery when treating patients with short-sightedness. The experts claim that new research shows that lens implants achieve the same vision correction results as laser eye surgery and is proving increasingly popular with patients.

Laser eye surgery is commonly used to treat short-sightedness, or myopia, by removing corneal cells and changing the way the eye filters and processes light. However, lens implant procedures achieve the same affect by putting a focus-changing artifcial lens in
front of the eye's natural lens.

Researchers at Moorfields, led by Dr Allon Barsam, analysed data from three separate medical studies in order to compare the success rates of the two procedures. The data detailed surgery carried out 132 patients. They found that lens implant procedures seemed to be safer than laser eye surgery, whilst producing equally effective results. Patient satisfaction surveys also seemed to indicate that lens implant procedures were more popular with patients than laser surgery.
