Lens Implant Could Improve Cataract Treatment
A new lens implant has been produced that could dramatically improve the effectiveness of cataract surgery. Lenstec, the manufacturers behind the new technology, claim that the lens will enable surgeons to achieve greater levels of precision when carrying out complicated vision correcting surgery that could restore the vision of people fully or partially blinded by cataracts.
Cataracts are a vision disorder that leads to the development of cloudy patches across the lens of the eye that obscure vision. Cataract formation increases with age and is thought to affect 1 in every 3 people in the UK over the age of 65. Cataracts can be treated by replacing the eye’s damaged natural lens with an intraocular lens implant. Cataract corrective surgery has increased in popularity with over 13 million cataract correcting surgical procedures having been carried out across the world over the past ten years.
Lenstec claim their new intraocular lens implant technology is up to 3 times more precise than other lenses. They also suggest that the variability in other prescriptive lenses can lead to poorer surgical results. A view partly supported by Dr William Maloney, associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, who said in Ocular Surgery News, "When it comes to power, what you see is definitely not what you get. The tolerance for error in most IOL labeling is now obsolete, and it too fails today's refractive accuracy test. Until that changes, your efforts at refractive recalibration will be hostage to this outdated industry standard."
It is now hoped that the development of this new lens technology will lead to further technology developments that will further improve the treatment of cataracts which would greatly improve the quality of vision and quality of life of millions of people in the UK and beyond.
