Using the Internet could Damage your Eyesight

Texting and frequently using the internet could damage your eyesight, a US corrective eye surgery expert has warned. Dr Thomas Tooma has claimed that the increasing levels of short-sightedness and visual myopia in the Western world can be directly linked to the growth in popularity of the internet and hand-held mobile devices. Dr Tooma says that more and more people are frequently straining their eyes by spending increased levels of time searching on-line or texting on their mobile phones.

Dr Tooma warns that carrying out activities that involve viewing objects up-close for a prolonged period of time can result in developing short-sightedness and other serious eye problems. Dr Tooma not only links the internet’s ever growing popularity with increasing levels of global myopia, but also with the increasing number of people opting to undergo corrective eye surgery for conditions including short-sightedness. However, corrective eye surgery expert, Dr Tooma is keen to point out that internet use is not the only factor causing growing levels of short-sightedness. Other factors that are potentially responsible for increased levels of myopia include lack of outdoor exercise, genetic propensity and more.

Dr Tooma’s comments come as new research, published by the Sight Care Group, shows that millions of British women are letting potential eye problems go untreated as they are too vain to go to wear spectacles. The Sight Care Group has warned that deteriorating eye-sight and eye health problems can dramatically effect the quality of life for sufferers and has urged women across Britain to get regular eye checks in order to identify and treat conditions including short-sightedness.
