Macular Degeneration & Eating Red Meat
It is estimated that over 2% of people aged 50 and above suffer from a condition known as age related macula degeneration (ARMD). This is a painless, progressive disease that affects part of the eye that is responsible for central vision. Sufferers often report blurring and loss of vision, which affects tasks such as reading and driving. The edge or peripheral aspect of their vision remains intact. Medical professionals have known for a long time that dietary imbalances can lead to the development of certain diseases. A recent study published in the American Journal Of Epidemiology concluded that eating red meat could raise an individual’s risk of developing ARMD by up to 50%, when eaten at least 10 times per week. It was also reported that people eating chicken at least 3 times per week had a 50% lower risk.
There has been much research into treatment for Macular Degeneration, as it is a leading cause of blindness throughout the world. The main cause of AMD is age but the causes can be different in different people. Contributing factors are thought to include the following:
- Smoking, including passive smoking
- Diet
- Blood Pressure as this can effect circulation
- Cholesterol with a high fat diet likely to be directly related to the condition
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Sunlight exposure, especially in the summer sun can contribute to AMD and sunglasses should be worn to protect the eye.
Pro-inflammatory states can also influence the condition, such as chlamydia and macular pigment. Caucasian‘s are at higher risk and Afro-Caribbean very rarely suffer from macular degeneration.
Up until recently the only treatment for AMRD was laser treatment where very bright light is used to makes tiny burns at the back of the eye. However, as time passes, the laser burns can expand and this can reduce central vision. Anti-VEGF drugs are increasingly used to treat AMD. The drugs are injected into the eye on a regular basis.
