Age Related Macular Degeneration week, 18th- 26th September 2010, commences today and will see multiple health organizations come together to help raise awareness about the progressive eye disease – thought to be the leading cause of vision loss, worldwide.

Genotype Research Into Macular Degeneration Begins

NeoVista Inc has announced, today, that is to begin profiling the genotypes of patients with age related macular degeneration – the leading cause of blindness, worldwide. As a continuation of the Genetic Risk Assessment of Macular Degeneration or GRAPE study, researchers will test for genetic markers in patients who have responded badly or well to treatments for the progressively blinding eye disease.

Smoking Linked to Macular Degeneration

People who stop smoking could dramatically reduce their risk of developing age related macular degeneration, according to new research. A study published in the journal Archives of Ophthalmology shows that people who don't smoke or had stopped smoking were less likely to have drusen deposits in their retinas - an indicator of early onset age-related macular degeneration.

British researchers have claimed that people who smoke are at an increased risk of developing age related macular degeneration. Researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine claim that smokers are twice as likely to develop the progressive eye disorder.

New Genes Linked to Macular Degeneration

Scientists in America have identified three new genes that are associated with the development of age related macular degeneration. Researchers conducted a large scale genetic study and analysed more than 18,000 genome samples in order to discover this new link between genes and the hereditary eye problem.

Vision Loss Test for Home

The pioneering launch of the first home tester kit for vision lost has been launched in the UK which could spell a much needed turn around in the ever-growing worry of vision problem, age-related macular degeneration. The test involves a simple saliva sample, taken by the patient spitting into a tube and then sending it back to the lab for testing. The test is aimed at middle-aged people who are the most susceptible to this vision impairment.

Quick DNA Test Could Diagnose Age-related Macular Degeneration

Scientists have revealed how they are currently developing a quick and easy DNA test that will detect the development or risk of development for inherited diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By using a sample of the patients saliva doctors will be able to detect any changes caused by mutated genes within their DNA.

Study begins for Radiation Therapy for Wet AMD

This unique clinical trial which hasn’t been seen anywhere before is to be conducted by Oraya Therapeutics enrolling at least 150 patients from seven different European countries. The trial involves what they call a masked and sham-controlled test to review any risks or benefits through the treatment of “Wet” Age-related Macular Degeneration by radiation therapy.
