Genotype Research Into Macular Degeneration Begins
NeoVista Inc has announced, today, that is to begin profiling the genotypes of patients with age related macular degeneration – the leading cause of blindness, worldwide. As a continuation of the Genetic Risk Assessment of Macular Degeneration or GRAPE study, researchers will test for genetic markers in patients who have responded badly or well to treatments for the progressively blinding eye disease.
NeoVista's scientists explain that understanding the genetic link between eye diseases and treatment response could be key to treating eye conditions such as age related macular degeneration, as genetic variance seems to bear on free radical production and oxidative damage in the eyes which can further impair vision.
Researchers hope that profiling genetic markers in this way, may also help them to better identify and treat patients in future by allowing eye care experts to make informed decisions about who will greater benefit from early treatment and who may be at greater risk of developing complications post-treatment.
