Age Related Macular Degeneration Week Commences
Age Related Macular Degeneration week, 18th- 26th September 2010, commences today and will see multiple health organizations come together to help raise awareness about the progressive eye disease – thought to be the leading cause of vision loss, worldwide.
The awareness efforts will no doubt be supported by the recent revelations that the progressive eye disease costs the global economy hundreds of millions every year. With AMD Alliance International estimating 343 million dollars a year are spent treating the disease.
And with the National Institute of Health reporting that diagnosed cases of the eye condition are estimated to double to 20 million by 2020.
Eye care experts hope that a new campaign 'Don't Surrender to AMD' will help to elevate the profile of the disease and will also encourage at-risk individuals to have their eyes examined.
