AMD patients could see clear again with Cataract Surgery

AMD (age-related macular degeneration) sufferers of any stage form, be it mild or advanced could see clearly with surgeries normally used for cataract patients. AMD can lead to blindness as the eyes generally deteriorate with age, occurring due to cells of the macula ceasing to work or becoming damaged.

Previously, there were a number of different treatments available for this type of eye deterioration and they normally involved the use of lasers or the injection of drugs into the eye. However, following this recent discovery, the success of cataract surgery for AMD patients has been promisingly successful. There is thought to be no difference between “dry” and “wet” type AMD sufferers and the surgery seems beneficial for both types. Equally the stage that the AMD is at seems of little consequence to the success rate of the surgery.

The surgery does still have a taboo as researcher Emily Chew suggested that cataract surgery could worsen AMD and thus many further tests were carried out. Despite this, people who have received the cataract surgery have been rewarded with improved vision. More promisingly, it is shown that many of the cases are still benefiting from their improved visions a year after the surgery.
