Leaps and bounds made in the detection of Macular Degeneration
Recent research spearheaded by the University of Kentucky has identified a previously unknown marker for ‘wet’ age related macular degeneration or ARMD.
ARMD is the leading cause of blindness in people of old age in westernised cultures. It is caused by damage to the macula, an area of the retina that is responsible for detecting light in the central field of vision. In so called ‘wet’ or neurovascular macular degeneration this damage is due to the growth of new blood vessels into the retina. Once this process starts, it can be slowed, but not stopped. This causes problems with recognising people, reading and driving to name but a few. Currently there is no known cure for the disease, however research in the field is advancing rapidly.
The results of the study were published in Nature, one of the best journals for scientific research. Scientists isolated and identified a receptor called CCR3, which they hope could not only be used for detection of the disease, but also for preventative treatment. This is the first time a specific receptor has been found for the disease, which raises hopes about possibly finding a cure.
The CCR3 receptor is found in many areas of the body, primarily where local inflammation is occurring. By using mice and molecules that bind to CCR3, the research team identified CCR3 receptors on the surface of abnormal blood vessels. This was a groundbreaking technique. The team also used the same molecules that were used to detect the CCR3 receptor to treat the disease. Over 70% of the mice recovered. With current ARMD treatment around 55% of patients get slowing of the disease.
This research is very exciting for the large number of sufferers of wet ARMD worldwide. It is the largest cause of blindness in the westernised world and by taking steps to prevent and cure the disease we can help maintain and restore the sight of millions.
