Wavefront technology in laser eye surgery is also termed:
Custom LASIK, Custom Wavefront LASIK, Advanced CustomVue Wavefront, Wavefront-Guided LASIK and Wavelength LASIK.
Wavefront technology is an advanced system which enables custom laser eye surgery. It can essentially be incorporated into LASIK, IntraLase, PRK and other types of laser eye surgery procedures. Unlike these traditional laser procedures, wavefront technology precisely measures the eyes unique imperfections, called higher-order aberrations. This is done in conjunction with measuring myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and/or astigmatism. All of this information is collected before the laser eye surgery procedure. Then, in the laser eye surgery procedure, when the laser is directed onto the eye, it uses this information to change the shape of the cornea in order to improve the quality of vision more accurately.
Wavefront is still relatively new to laser eye surgery and not all laser eye surgery clinics offer this technology yet. If you are interested in Wavefront, click here to find a laser eye surgery clinic in your area and ask about Wavefront technology.
Incorporating Wavefront into Laser Eye Surgery
The basic principles of wavefront technology have brought a new dimension to the practice of correcting refractive errors using a laser. Wavefront uses a three dimensional measurement of how the eye processes images, to guide the laser. This gives a higher degree of accuracy in the laser eye surgery procedure. With a wavefront measurement system, precise, individualised vision correction outcomes can be achieved. These would be impossible with other types of laser eye surgery, which rely on standard measurements to correct vision. Wavefront technology allows the eye surgeon to first of all determine whether you are suitable for laser eye surgery and if so, to personalise your treatment to obtain the best possible result. The procedure is more expensive compared with other types of laser eye surgery but is the most sophisticated and least invasive.
