Advantages of Wavefront Technology

Increased Accuracy

Light rays enter the eye as flat sheets and leave the eye as regular flat sheets, when vision is perfect.  When there are imperfections in the eye, wavefronts exit the eye as irregular curved sheets of light.  An aberrometer is used to measure and record these irregularities and thus accurately map the eye and its imperfections.  Wavefront technology analyses the entire visual system and the excimer lasers produce a rounded, sharply focused profile, measuring fractions of millimetres across.  The information sent to the laser is determined by the results obtained from mapping of the eye.  Using a Wavelight Analyser, visual distortions in the eye are shown on a 3D map.  Imperfections in the eye distort the grid pattern as light passes through the eye and these distortions in the grid pattern are used to calculate the imperfections.  Wavefront enables smaller amounts of corneal tissue to be removed, with greater accuracy.

Halos, Glare & Night Vision

Traditional forms of vision improvement including glasses, contact lenses, LASIK, PRK and LASEK laser eye surgery, improve low order aberrations such as long sightedness, short sightedness and astigmatism.  By introducing wavefront technology, night vision may be vastly improved together with problems of halos and glare.  This is because the high-resolution data, which is obtained from the initial assessments, produce larger more uniformed optical zones, which determine how well you can see, in terms of contrast sensitivity and fine detail.  By treating such higher order aberrations, problems such as decreased contrast sensitivity or night vision, glare and halos can be improved.  Higher-order aberrations do not always affect vision and traditional LASIK only treats lower order aberrations.  However, research is still speculative and there is not a consensus that wavelength LASIK can treat high order aberrations effectively and some argue that laser eye surgery induces these aberrations.  There is however, a general consensus that wavelength incorporated laser eye surgery, creates fewer aberrations than conventional laser eye surgery.

Large Pupils

If you have large pupils, laser eye procedures incorporating wavefront technology, may be able to treat you efficiently unlike other laser eye surgery procedures.

Thin Cornea

If you have thin corneas, this technology may be ideal because it removes smaller amounts of corneal tissue.

Higher Prescription

Higher prescriptions can be treated when wavefront is used, compared to traditional LASIK surgery.

Improved Vision

Patients report a higher quality of vision compared with other types of laser eye procedures.

Faster Recovery

Recovery from surgery is usually faster compared with other types of laser eye surgery procedures.
