Vision Problems

When light enters the eye through the cornea, the eye refracts or bends light rays and focuses them, creating an image on the retina.  Eyesight problems are caused when the perfectly dome shape of the cornea is out of shape and bends light in the wrong way.  This prevents the image from correctly focusing on the retina and vision becomes unclear.  This bending and focusing of light known as refraction, leads to refractive errors such as long sightedness & short sightedness.  Glasses and contact lenses refract the light before they enter the eye and therefore enhance focus by counteracting refractive errors.

Laser Eye Surgery

Refractive errors can often be corrected with laser eye surgery.  The procedure is often used to replace glasses and contact lenses.  Laser eye surgery works by permanently changing the shape of the cornea by using a focused laser of light of a specific wavelength, to remove tiny amounts of corneal tissue and to mould the cornea to its optimum shape.  This improves vision and can eliminate or reduce dependency on prescription glasses and contact lenses.  Unlike alternative procedures, the benefit of laser eye surgery is that modern techniques do not allow instruments to enter the eye itself, therefore damage or infection inside the eye is very rare.  Advancements in technology give excellent clinical results, making laser eye surgery extremely popular throughout the globe, whilst being generally considered a safe procedure.
