How is it that someone can have had perfect vision for all of their life and then suddenly need reading glasses or contact lenses when they get older?
The answer is often presbyopia – a refractive error caused by the stiffening of the eye’s lens with age. It can not be cured with lasers, only sated with glasses or contacts. However, help is at hand. Conductive Keratoplasty, a relatively new type of refractive surgery, is now available at ULTRALASE – one of the UK’s largest providers of laser eye surgery – as Ultra-CK. Interestingly, CK is in actuality not a laser treatment; instead involving the use of radio waves.
CK is usually performed as a ‘blended vision’ treatment. This means that one eye (usually the dominant one) is adjusted in focus to view objects mainly at distance, and the other eye is treated to focus mainly on the close up. The brain then blends the two images, allowing the patient to see both near and distance objects.
The CK treatment for presbyopia, works by using the heat from radio waves in order to tighten the minute fibres on the surface of the eye. During the procedure eye drops are administered to soothe the eye. An instrument shaped like a pen, uses radio wave energy in a circular pattern, to slowly shrinks the cornea. The circular movement pattern is akin to a belt becoming tighter around the cornea. The net effect is that the curvature of the cornea, increases. The procedure is painless and people can return to work within 48 hours.
With over 200,000 Ultra-CK sight correction procedures performed to date, the treatment seems to be a success for Ultralase. Satisfied customers have been backing them up with testimonies such as “I've binned the specs for good” as their reward for embracing a treatment that is both fairly new and lacking in lasers.
Conductive Keratoplasty is suitable for most over 40’s that require reading glasses. However it may be inappropriate for some individuals, including those with pacemakers. See the Conductive Keratoplasty Guide, for more information about CK or contact Ultralase or another refractive surgry clinic, to book an oppointment.
