Refractive Errors
If you have problems with your vision, everyday activities can become difficult and your whole life can be affected. If you are keen on particular sports, they can become difficult to partake in. Contact sports can become especially difficult since glasses can be knocked and broken and contact lenses can be lost. And then there is the added pressure of having to pay for new glasses or contact lenses. In the past, people have opted out of certain activities and sports because of poor vision. Nowadays however, people have other options.
Instead of having to change your lifestyle or give up hobbies and stop doing things that make you happy, refractive eye surgery procedures can give you some choice.
Refractive errors include short sightedness and long sightedness. Both are extremely common. Refractive eye surgery can correct sight and improve short and long sightedness. There are various eye refractive surgery procedures, which do not necessarily give perfect vision but can significantly reduce dependency on glasses and contact lenses.
Refractive Eye Surgery
Increasingly popular and now a common type of eye surgery is, laser eye surgery. This is a type of refractive surgery because it corrects refractive errors. Laser eye surgery uses a laser to permanently change the shape of the cornea to its optimum shape, which then improves vision. The cornea is the clear part at the front of the eye, which lets light in. Its shape determines what happens to the light and in turn how well you see objects. Laser eye surgery can eliminate problems with the shape of the cornea. The two most commonly performed types of laser eye surgery are Lasik and PRK.
There are numerous reasons why you might want to opt for refractive surgery. It may seem that there is a significant financial investment, but the cost of frames and new glasses or contacts can soon add up and laser eye surgery may actually be a sound investment.
If you are considering refractive eye surgery, talk to your optician or general practitioner. An optometrist can tell you if you are a suitable candidate and can refer you on to an eye surgeon known as an ophthalmologist, who will advise you on the best course of action.
