Following the Food and Drug Administrations approval of the international laser eye surgery in the 1990’s, LASIK eye surgery has treated millions of people. However, one of the former members of the FDA has struck out against LASIK eye surgeries, suggesting that side effects haven’t been taken seriously enough.
Morris Waxler, who was involved in the decision making at the time LASIK become certified, has now spoken out saying that whilst the side effects were evident at the time of approval, the team didn’t know precisely what to do about the data. It appears to be his guilty conscience of patient’s stories following his retirement from the FDA that have lead to his public interview. LASIK surgery involves a small incision into the cornea of the eye, where a laser is then inserted to reshape the tissue of the cornea. Some of the side effects include visual distortion such as; halos, starbursts, double-vision and so on. Some people even suffer from nighttime blindness or dry eyes. Not only can these side effects cause visual impairments but they can actually worsen the sufferers eyes to such an extent that they are unable to drive and lead the life they were normally used to.
Whilst this outspoken concern from Morris Waxler is concerning for many people who have or are considering LASIK surgery, the side-effects are far outweighed by the benefits that are seen globally. However, it does raise particular concern as to the fact that drug and surgery administrators like the FDA are actually dismissing potential side-effects in favour of some surgeries. Waxler himself does comment that the agency have the potential to enforce guidelines within the manufacturers that have to be adhered to in order to keep their product on the market. Whilst he doesn’t believe that things like LASIK should be brought out of the public market, he does think that tougher guidelines need enforcing to guarantee safer surgery/medical practices.
