Alongside news of Laser Eye Surgery’s has always been a concern that the long-term affects of such surgeries were unknown and patients could be doing their eyes more damage than good. However, in a recent study conducted at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota they have determined that laser surgery does not seem to have any long-lasting damaging effect on the cells lining the cornea.

The study involved the examination of pictures taken of the endothelial cells of the cornea before surgery and nine years later. This test was also conducted on people who hadn’t had any form of laser eye surgery. The study found there was a 5.3% reduction in the density of the endothelial cells. Whilst this may seem like quite a high decline, the study reassures us it is not; as in the eyes tested that had had no laser eye surgery there was a yearly decline of around 0.6% which adds up to a 9 yearly total almost the same as the laser-treated eyes.

The study included both photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and Lasik (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis). Further, it could also offer hope and reassurance for a surgery that uses donated tissue to help cure corneal problems, posterior lamellar keratoplasty. The findings suggest that any eyes that have undergone laser treatment will be eligible for this cornea transplant surgery.
