Lasik (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery is a laser correcting surgery that is one of the most commonly used procedures to correct impaired vision. The surgery has two parts to it; one of them being a thin incision with a blade into the top part of the cornea to create a circular hole for the laser to pass through. Therefore, people with insufficient cornea thickness have previously been ineligible for the surgery.

Those who were previously ineligible for the surgery could have instead turned to another type of correction surgery called PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), which would not need the incision into the cornea. Rather the laser would be placed directly on the eye. This type of surgery is very effective but a major drawback is the direct usage of the laser on the eye which can cause damage and irritation.

The incision into the cornea has now been advanced to use a laser to create the incision as opposed to the metal blade. This is therefore beneficial for all those who want correction surgery but have previously been refused Lasik surgery. The only people that Lasik surgery will not work for are those suffering from presbyopia which is normally caused by the aging process and leaves the sufferer long-sighted. There are other criteria areas that people will need to pass before they can have Lasik surgery, and you should consult your optician for further information on the surgery. Even though the surgery is very successful, it does need careful consideration and it is vital you are the right candidate for the surgery.
