A survey taken by Consumer Reports an independent consumer care company in America; has found that out of 793 adults 80% have been completely satisfied with the results from Lasik surgery.
John Santa M.D. the director of the Consumer Reports health centre remarked that 80% was a good number considering that surgeons usually get it perfect 60% of the time.
However 55% of those who took the survey also reported that they still required the use of glasses or contact lenses for certain activities.
Though this does not take into account that patients often believe that they will have absolutely perfect vision after surgery, which is quite an unrealistic view to take. Many experts have stated in the past that patients expect too much from Lasik procedures, particularly if they had a pre-existing condition that appeared around their 40s-50s.
The survey also found that 53% of participants were experiencing side effects up to four weeks after surgery. Side effects that were listed included dry eyes, and visual effects such as halos, glares and starbursts. This survey comes at a particularly difficult time; as the U.S Food and Drugs Administration who acts as regulators in the use of Lasik surgery technology are currently performing their own investigation. This was sparked by the rising number of complaints regarding side effects and the lack of data on how often these take place.
The Consumer Reports survey also commented on this stating that, even though Lasik surgery is not regarded as a necessary procedure it should be monitored in the same way that more essential surgeries are.
The survey also noted the reasons for why patients want the treatment. Over half of those who take part had surgery to correct nearsightedness while only around 20% of those questioned wanted it to help them with farsightedness
