Eye Test for Keratoconus
If you are concerned about these risk factors or if you have noticed changes in your vision, such as blurring, shadows in your field of vision, or frequent headaches related to eye strain, you need to contact your eye care professional so he or she can diagnose the condition and determine the appropriate method of treatment.
In most cases, your optician can use a regular eye exam and spot the change in your cornea’s shape, even if the condition is relatively early in development. However, many ophthalmologists will use additional tests to make sure the diagnosis is correct. Here are some of the tests your eye care professional may require:
- The Slit-lamp examination is one of the tests that are most frequently used. With this method, your eye care professional will use a lamp that shines a vertical light into your eye, which makes the eye and its structures more visible. That way he or she can see the shape of the cornea.
- An eye refraction test is a very standard part of the eye examination and is used typically. Optical equipment can shine a light into your eye and measure its refraction. This measurement will let eye care professional know if the cornea is shaped correctly or not. Other equipment can be used to further back-up this diagnosis.
- With the Keratometry examination, your eye doctor focuses a circle of light that is shone directly onto your cornea. By looking at what happens in the eye when this happens, your eye care professional can check the curvature of your cornea and diagnose the condition if the changed shaped is visible.
- Scans by topographical measurement devices can be used to scan your cornea to create an image of it. The measurements can demonstrate whether or not the cornea is misshapen.
After examination of the results, a diagnosis can be made and appropriate treatment method for your condition can begin.
