New Post-Glaucoma Treatment Trialled

A new treatment that could reduce retinal scarring in people who have undergone surgery to correct glaucoma is currently being trialled. Manufacturers Promedior Inc. claim, if approved, the treatment would be the first anti-fibrotic drug therapy licensed to treat a fibrotic eye disease and the first available, in both America and Europe, to remedy post-surgical scarring in glaucoma patients.

New Glaucoma Data Unveiled

Scientists in the Netherlands have released new research data that could help eye care experts to better treat visual field loss in patients with glaucoma – a progressively blinding eye disease. Researchers hope that the new data, published in the September issue of the journal Ophthalmology, could help to prevent hundreds of thousands of patients, worldwide, from irreversibly losing their sight.

Eye drops are commonly used to treat glaucoma - a potentially blinding eye condition that is thought to affect over 90 million people across the world.

New Vision Saving Glaucoma Surgery

A British woman has become the first to benefit from a new surgical treatment designed to stop the potentially blinding eye disease glaucoma in its tracks. Mary McCall, a 66 year old woman from Belfast, had been gradually losing her sight to the progressive eye problem but is now able to see clearly after surgeons inserted a small titanium chip into her eye.

Brain Holds Insight to Glaucoma

According to a recent research study published in this weeks Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences scientists believe they have found that early warning signs of glaucoma can be found within the brain and not the eye. Glaucoma is often left undetected for a considerable amount of time but with an estimated 80 million people expected to be suffering from glaucoma by 2020 the need for treatment is strikingly clear.

Green Tea against Glaucoma

Many foods, we are told, are beneficial to our health in various different ways, and for some time green tea has been amongst them. However, scientists in Hong Kong are the first to discover that tissues within the eye actually absorb beneficial substances found in things like green tea. Previously it remained unclear as to whether or not the particular antioxidant “catechin” journeyed from the stomach into the eye tissue.
