New Years Resolution – Protect Yourself against Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a devastating eye disease that leaves many blind or with vastly deteriorated vision. However, with a little awareness of the disease thousands of cases could be prevented. The cure of glaucoma is in prevention; certain things such as maintaining a healthy blood pressure and body weight could reduce the risks dramatically. As Glaucoma Awareness Month approaches us in January, it appears vision experts in Las Vegas have taken note and are now taking action.
Vision Source Las Vegas will be conducting screenings at ten different locations in Las Vegas over the week from the 25th to 30th of January. They hope to be able to catch any forms of glaucoma early but more importantly to raise awareness amongst the community of the preventive measures that can be taken against the disease. Many facts of glaucoma can go unheard or misinterpreted; glaucoma can in fact also strike depending on your sex, age, race and lifestyle. Unfortunately, glaucoma isn’t a disease you will known instinctively if you get it as there are no painful symptoms; but if it does go unnoticed, once glaucoma has developed there is currently no cure for vision loss from this disease. Therefore, by identifying whether or not you are in a high risk group for the disease, will enable you to take precautionary measures.
Typically, glaucoma affects the optic nerve of the eye, which is the part of the eye that sends images to the brain. Therefore, if damaged it will result in vastly impaired vision or even vision loss. The damage to the optic nerve occurs through excessive pressure due to the fluid from the eye not draining away efficiently. If glaucoma is caught early, there is a measure that can help reduce this pressure on the optic nerve by nearly 20% using simple eye drops.
