Scratch-Resistant Lenses
Lenses made from glass are naturally scratch resistant but can shatter quite easily and can therefore be dangerous. Plastic lenses can scratch quite easily and this can be very annoying. Unprotected lenses can easily be scratched if you don't look after them. These scratches will effect the quality of the image and can make night driving quite difficult.
Scratch-resistant coatings can be added to lenses to protect them. These coatings can be made of diamond-like carbon and polycrystalline diamond. A process known as ionisation is used to create a thin, long lasting film on the surface of the lens. This also prolongs lens life.
