Light from the sun is made up of many wavelengths. Some wavelengths are visible, and enable us to see colours but it also includes infra red and ultra violet light. Too much UV light can cause damage to our eyes. The retina at the back of the eye can become scarred. Over time, this can impair our vision. Photochromic lenses react to the UV light, providing comfort from glare and more protection as the intensity of UV light increases. Photochromic lenses change from colourless to dark depending on the amount of ultraviolet exposure.  Although lenses can be bought tinted, photochromic lenses are clear, but in sunlight, a tint appears.  This can eliminate the need for prescription sunglasses.  They are available in a wide range of materials and can be used for many refractive errors.
