Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) for Puffy Eyes

Puffy or baggy lower eyelids can make you look older and more tired.  Creams can be applied to relieve temporary symptoms caused by sodium retention, which may be due to a lack of sleep or excessive crying.  Long term symptoms can be caused by problems beneath the eyelid and can require more serious treatment such as blepharoplasty.  The eyelid normally holds fat directly beneath the eyeball to act as a shock absorber and protect the eyeball from the eye socket bone.  The membrane under the lower eyelid can become weak overtime and allow fat to bulge forwards by stretching the skin and muscles around the area and forming ‘eye bags.’  This fatty orbital herniation or puffy eye or bag, can be a hereditary condition but is usually attributed to age.  Dark circles under puffy eyes may be reduced by a more advanced form of blepharoplasty surgery known as arcus marginalis release.
