Preparing for Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Before surgery, numerous assessments are made to assess suitability of eyelid surgery/blepharoplasty.  General health and medical history are checked including illnesses, operations, allergies and current medication.  Details of eye tests are required together with whether you wear glasses or contact lenses.  Eyelids are examined, together with vision, the tear film, the front of the eye and the retina.  Skin condition is considered and measurements are taken of eyebrows and eyelids.  The surgeon will need to assess whether the surgery will be appropriate, considering the whole facial appearance.

If you smoke, you may be asked to quit prior to the operation.  This is because smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood and increases the risk of a chest and wound infection and slows down recovery.

The surgeon will discuss your reasons for surgery and it is important to ensure that expectations can be realistically met.  Details of what the procedure entails together with the benefits and risks are addressed so that you are fully aware of the procedure.

A consent form is usually signed prior to the operation to ensure that you understand the risks, benefits and alternative treatments, and have given authority to complete the surgery.
