Vitamin Deficiency Linked to Vision Loss
Pregnant women who have had weight loss surgery could experience severe vitamin deficiencies that could badly affect the sight of their unborn children, according to new report from the American Association of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
The shocking new findings have come as a result of a clinical investigation carried out when experts began to worry that an Australian woman's new born son had developed severe vision problems after being deprived of vitamin A during his early foetal development. Clinical experts found that the woman, who had had weight loss surgery years before pregnancy, was deprived of several key vitamins that affect the formation of vision processing tissues in unborn babies.
Researchers now worry that an increasing number of newborns could face debilitating vision loss as more and more women undergo weight loss surgery before becoming pregnant. experts recommend that women who have had gastric bands fitted or have undergone other weight loss surgery should consult with their doctors and remedy any vitamin deficiencies before trying for a baby.
