Tool Detects Eye Disease Earlier

New research shows that a newly designed imaging probe could be key to diagnosing eye diseases before symptoms manifest. Researchers claim that the tool could revolutionise the treatment of many serious eye conditions by enabling eye care experts to identify, diagnose and treat eye conditions before they can seriously damage eye health.

Research, published in the FASEB journal, details how scientists have been able to identify inflammatory eye disease at a molecular level by using the probe and a specially formulated chemical compound. Researchers developed a specialist compound containing microscopic fluorescent molecules usually found on the immune cells produced by the body to fight the eye disease. They found that they were able to detect disease molecules and immune cells produced in the early response to eye disease by examining eyes using the compound and probes combined.

It is hoped that using the non invasive probe and compound will result in saving the eyesight of an increasing number of people suffering from growing global eye health problems including glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. Researchers have also been able to gather invaluable knowledge into the workings of the auto immune response by being able to examine microscopic immune cell molecules in the very early stages of disease. It is hoped that this knowledge can be developed with further research and used to understand and treat disease in other areas of the body.
