Retinitis Pigmentosa Research a Winner at Eye Care 'Oscars'

A scientist researching retinitis pigmentosa has been awarded a grant worth thousands at the Research to Prevent Blindness Awards - the eye care charity bash equivalent of the Oscars. Professor Lu of the University of Louisville School of Medicine will use the funds to develop genetic research that could be used to develop a cure for the progressively blinding eye disorder.

Professor Lu was awarded the William and Mary Greve Special Scholar Award - which is presented annually to a brilliant young scientist thought to be carrying out especially promising research.

Professor Lu will develop existing research on the potential of gene therapy to successfully control the body's immune response to retinal inflammation caused by the eye disease. Eye care experts hope that the genetics based research will help to better treat the condition which can be caused by small defects in over 100 individual genes.
