Retina Successfully Created From Stem Cells
Scientists at the University of California have been able to successfully create an early stage retina using human stem cells. The development is a medical first and has sparked hope that stem-cell retinas could soon be created and used to treat eye conditions including macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and more.
Scientists were able to construct the retina by using a differentiation technique to create the multiple different cell types needed to engineer a functioning retina. The scientists encouraged stem cells to develop into the desired retina components by bathing them in gradient solutions.
Researchers are currently testing the stem-cell retinas in animals and, following a positive response, intend to move onto human clinical trials.
