Red Wine Ingredient Treats Eye Diseases
People with eye health problems may have an excuse for indulging in a glass or two of red wine after new research shows that an ingredient in the tipple could control harmful blood vessel growth in the eyes. A study carried out by researchers at the Washington School of Medicine, St Louis, explains that reseveratrol - also found in grapes, blueberries and peanuts - could be used to treat age related eye diseases including macular degeneration.
The study, published in the American Journal of Pathology, reports that the substance can be used to reverse the formation of abnormal blood vessels in the eye that impairs vision. The findings could lead to new treatments for age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy - both eye diseases are leading causes of blindness in older adults.
