Race Linked to Eye Disease Risk

New research suggests that Latin Americans are at increased risk of developing a variety of serious eye conditions than their non Hispanic white counterparts. Research published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology warns that the Hispanic community are at increased risk of developing serious eye conditions that other ethnic groups.

Researchers at the Los Angeles Eye Study, supported by America's National Eye Institute, studied the eye health of 4600 people over a four year period and found that latinos are at increased risk of developing cataracts, visual impairment, blindness and more. Researchers claim that their findings highlight the need to further research the links between ethnicity, genetics and eye diseases in order to better diagnose and treat growing global eye problems including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma and more.

The researchers expressed their concern that as many as 60% of eye problems go undiagnosed within the latino community. It is hoped that their findings will lead to drives to detect serious eye problems earlier across all ethnic groups.
