Omega-3 Benefits in Baby Formula’s
According to a study released in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition the inclusion of the nutrient omega-3, which provides a source of DHA, could benefit children’s eyesight. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in breast milk but with many mothers being unable to breastfeed for whatever reasons they want to be self-assured that by giving their babies high-street formula’s they are still giving them all the nutrients they need.
The study involved the examination of 244 infants aged between 1 to 9 days old who were then assigned to a particular group. One group acted as the control group and received no DHA in their formula, with three other groups receiving DHA but in varying amounts. At the age of one year the children’s eyesight was then assessed to see how their vision was forming, and the results showed that the groups receiving DHA had a better clarity of vision than the ones who did not. The amounts supplemented within the formula varied from .64% to .96% and no difference appeared between the results and the amount supplemented. Researchers also noted that their appeared to be no short-term side effects.
The study has receivied backing from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) who suggest that DHA is beneficial to the development of eye health if children, infants and even fetuses. Before this study was released the EFSA did enforce regulations that 200mg of DHA per day is sufficient for lactating women, with 100mg per day appropriate for children from the age of 7 to 24 months. Experts involved in the research are suggesting that much more research needs conducting to assess the long-term effects of DHA on children. Equally they advise parents who are concerned about their infant’s nutrient intake to speak to their physician about appropriate steps that can be taken.
