New Eye Screening Technique Revealed
Scientists from the University of Birmingham and University College London have revealed new imaging technology that could help eye experts to better screen for harmful eye diseases including diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration. Described in a journal issued by the American Institute of Physics, the new equipment uses multiple wavelengths and led light to illuminate the eye and create a pixelated map of the eye that draws attention to potentially diseased areas.
The highly sensitive imaging technology measures how light is absorbed by the eye's chomophore molecules. Researchers hope that the chomophore tracking technology will eventually be incorporated into the standard fundus camera used by opticians and optometrists to screen and measure eye health.
