New Eye Disease Drug Trialled
A new drug is being trialled that could be used to treat diabetic macular edema. Ampio Pharamceuticals has announced that it will begin an animal study to determine whether new drug Optina can successfully ease the symptoms of diabetic macular edema - the leading cause of blindness in non-elderly people, worldwide.
The eye disease occurs when abnormal or faulty blood vessels leak fluid into the eye and causes the retina to swell, resulting in vision loss. No drugs are currently licensed to treat the blinding eye disease. However, researchers hope that the drug can be made available for future release following successful animal trials and collection of in-vitro data.
