New Eye Cancer Radiation Protection
Scientists have found that silicon oil can be used to protect the vision of patients undergoing radiation treatment for eye cancer. The breakthrough will help to safeguard the vision of thousands of patients who regularly risk losing their sight in order to undergo the potentially life-saving cancer therapy.
Researchers believe that the silicon shields the eyes by absorbing up to 50% of the radiation and blocks harmful rays from reaching particularly sensitive parts of the eyes.
Surgeons use the silicon gel to replace the eye's natural vitreous fluids which are drained from the eye before an irradatiated plaque is inserted into the retina. Eye care experts then flush out the silicon and return the natural fluids to the eye after the plaque has been removed.
