Iron Levels Linked to Eye Disease
New research shows that having abnormally high levels of iron in your blood could increase the risk of developing macular degeneration - a progressively blinding eye disease. Experts claim that heightened levels of iron could cause the eyes to age quicker - causing vision loss prematurely.
Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia have been given a grant worth millions to investigate the link between iron and age related eye diseases. As part of the research, scientists will consider whether donating blood could lower the eye-problem risk of patients with abnormally high iron levels.
It is hoped that, following further research, doctors may be better able to diagnose and better treat the eye condition earlier by screening for high iron levels.
