Blink Frequently to Avoid Visual Problems

BlinkingComputer Vision Syndrome is a term, which is used for problems that occur from extended computer usage. As well as dry eye, it can also cause problems such as eyestrain, headaches and neck and shoulder pain. It’s usually attributed to poor lighting or glare from the computer screen, and can be caused simply by seating and posture irregularities, or viewing distance form the computer screen.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have recently discovered that infrequent blinking can increase incidence of dry eye and strained eyes and that by blinking and moistening the surface of the eye, Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) can be prevented.  Many people these days, work for a long period of time, in front of a computer and blinking can deter dry eye when working for prolonged periods at a computer.

Your optometrist should be informed about excessive computer use. Special glasses and computer screen filters are available to help reduce glare and eye discomfort.  It is advised that anyone who works at a computer to have yearly comprehensive eye examinations to maintain healthy eyes and vision, and to ensure that they have the correct eyeglass or contact lens strength. Special computer glasses are also recommended.  These are designed to aid comfort during excessive computer use.

Blinking & Dry Eye

Dry eye syndrome, or as it is medically known, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a condition whereby your eyes are incapable of producing sufficient amounts of tears, or tears evaporate quickly. Studies carried out have shown that Dry eye affects as many as 17-30% of all people at some point in their lives. At an increased risk of this are women and people above the age of 60.  Lack of blinking can exacerbate dry eye.

How to Avoid Dry Eye

The best way to avoid dry eye from computer use is to rest your eyes occasionally and to look away from the screen for around 20 seconds - "Try this quick time-out for your eyes every 20 minutes or so”. A humidifier would also prove to be beneficial in retaining your eyes moisture.
