Eyes Cured in Twenty Minutes

Those people who are suffering from age-related vision problems could find themselves cured in just twenty minutes with a new revolutionary operation. The speedy operation entails the transplant of an artificial lens into the eye which offers benefits as soon as the operation is completed and is advantageous over other eye correction treatments, including laser eye surgery.

The operation has been developed by specialists at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Yorkshire Eye Hospital. One of the leading developers, Mr Oliver Blackhouse, describes the operation as “outstandingly good” and provides many benefits over normal treatments. The artificial lens offers a permanent treatment to age related sight problems by replacing the eyes natural lens with an artificial one that prevents the development of cataracts too. The surgery offers more advantages than laser surgery as laser surgery often needs repeating and can only solve distance vision problems; whereas this revolutionary new surgery offers near sighted vision correction, distance vision and intermediate. Mr Blackhouse recommends the surgery should be considered by anyone over the age of 45 who has vision problems.

Alongside this promising news; scientists at Manchester Royal Infirmary are also looking at promising results for a transplant of the retina to help treat retinal degeneration. This is an inherited condition that affects hundreds of people each year and can lead to blindness. The team is also hoping their treatment for retina transplants could benefit people with age-related macular degeneration who would normally suffer blindness due to the central part of their retina becoming impaired.
