Eye Research Wins Prestigous Lasker Prize

A scientist, whose research has been used to develop a treatment that restores sight to patients blinded by wet age related macular degeneation, has been awarded a prestigous Lasker prize at this year's awards.

Napoleone Ferrara of Genetech, San Francisco, discovered VEGF – or vascular endolethiel growth factor – which has allowed eye care experts to control the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the eye in order to save the sight of many thousands of patients affected by age related macular degeneration.

The Lasker awards, thought to be the most prestigous American medical awards, were established to recognise and reward ground-breaking advances in research that will prevent and/or treat diseases now or in the future.
